NIPT (non invasive prenatal testing)

Starting the first of april 2014 it is possible to perform the NIPT, the Non Invasive Prenatal Test. 
The NIPT is a test in which the blood of the mother is used to test in a laboratory to see if the unborn child possibly has the diseases trisomy 21 (Downsyndrome), trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) or trisomy 13 (Patau's syndrome).

At this moment, in the Netherlands the NIPT can only be done as part of the TRIDENT study. Purpose of the study is to see what is the best way to offer the NIPT to the population (for example logistics).

During the study-period the NIPT can only be done by women who have had a nuchal translucency test which said that there is a higher risk of trisomy 21, 13 or 18. In a few exceptions NIPT kan also be done without the result of a nuchal translucency test.
